Alice escapes her mother's rules through a rabbit hole of spectacular madness — and the dancing is *chef's kiss*.
Distraught by her mother's refusal to allow her to meet gardener Jack, Victorian teenager Alice retreats into a book gifted to her by Lewls Carroll.
Production
Bob Crowley's sets transform before your eyes — pure theatrical sorcery.
Acting
Hayward's Alice: technically precise, emotionally searching, never twee.

Director
Christopher Wheeldon
Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Wheeldon deliberately cast the same dancer as Mother and Queen of Hearts to suggest Alice's rebellion is against authority itself, not just one woman. The ballet interrogates Carroll's original text rather than sanitizing it.
The 2011 Royal Ballet premiere cost over £1.6 million — at the time, the most expensive production in the company's history. The Cheshire Cat requires three puppeteers and took years to perfect.
