One village. One survivor who talked. The documentary that hunted a Nazi for 40 years.

Die Bewältigung: Oradour (1988)

unflinchingobsessivehaunting

Overview

Documentary

On June 10, 1944, the SS murdered nearly the entire population of the French village of Oradour. The ruins still stand, the population is buried in the cemetery. Only one person has ever been convicted of this crime: the former SS-Obersturmführer Heinz Barth.

Standout Aspects

Direction

Rosh and Schwarberg spent decades building this case.

Editing

Barth's interviews cut against survivor testimony—devastating.

Best for:Solo: Gut-punch viewing when you can sit with silence after.·Streaming: Pause often. You'll need breaks from the archival footage.
Heads up:Disturbing: Extensive archival photos of massacre aftermath.·Emotional: Survivor testimonies of children killed in church fire.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Rosh and Schwarberg were married journalists who spent 15 years investigating; this was their only co-directed film.

Cultural

Barth's 1983 trial in East Germany was largely political theater—the documentary's release in West Germany reignited debate about whether justice was ever actually served.
