This was the first time Mickey Mouse appeared in a theatrical short since 1953—he was basically retired. Disney only agreed to bring him back for this because they needed a bankable lead for Oscar consideration in the animated short category.
Burny Mattinson directed this at 50 and would become Disney's longest-tenured employee ever—working there until his death in 2023 at 87. This little Christmas special launched a 40-year career resurgence.
