Made during Japan's 'pink film' decline, Joyū interrogates the very exploitation cinema it aesthetically resembles. Teranishi came from that world and reportedly burned bridges with this.
The 23-minute unbroken take of the 'rehearsal' was actually the first time cast saw the script — their confusion is genuine. Teranishi kept only the fourth attempt.
