This is peak 'comédie française'—the genre where middle-aged men are tragicomic figures deserving sympathy despite doing absolutely nothing to earn it. Americans would make this a redemption arc; the French just let him suffer stylishly.
Valeria Golino (Giovanna) was already an international star from Rain Man and Hot Shots!—her presence here as the 'other woman' who barely registers is either brilliant commentary or just a waste of talent.
