Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Ralph Fiennes learned fencing for all three roles, with each generation showing declining skill reflecting changing priorities. The Sonnenschein family's real-life inspiration, the Weiss family, actually existed in Budapest.
The film's title refers both to the family's original name and the ironic sunshine of Hungary's 'golden age' before everything collapsed. Szabó deliberately cast Jewish actors for the core family, including three generations of actual mother-daughter casting with Harris, Ehle, and their real relationship.

I saw this movie when it was first released, purchased a DVD of it for an acquaintance, and need to see it again.
