Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Kim Jong-il was obsessed with cinema and literally abducted South Korean director Shin Sang-ok and his actress wife in 1978 to bolster North Korea's film industry. Pulgasari was Shin's final North Korean film before his dramatic 1986 escape.
The monster suit actor was Kenpachiro Satsuma, who played Godzilla in seven Toho films—meaning this is technically a Toho veteran's communist side quest.
