A mailman's dream house built by a legend — and nobody believed it could happen.
In 1959, a government employee named Richard Oyler, living in the tiny desert town of Lone Pine, California, asked world-famous modern architect Richard Neutra to design his modest family home. To Oyler's surprise, Neutra agreed. Thus began an unlikely friendship that led to the design and construction of an iconic mid-century modern masterpiece.

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Richard Oyler was a postal worker who simply wrote Neutra a letter with a $5 bill enclosed as a 'retainer' — the architect kept it framed until his death.
The Oyler House represents a rare case where Case Study Program aesthetics reached actual working-class families, not just Hollywood elites — Neutra's other clients included famous directors and industrial magnates.
