The massive 'Playtex House' set cost $500,000 (massive for 1961) and included a functional elevator, swimming pool, and working kitchen. Paramount wanted to burn it for insurance; Lewis fought to preserve it and lost.
This was Lewis's first film with complete creative control after splitting with Dean Martin—a deliberate statement that he didn't need a straight man. The industry watched to see if he'd flop. He didn't.
