Overview

Drama

June Lorich works at the Mesabi Mine on Minnesota's iron range. After an emotionally and physically abusive marriage, June is determined to make it on her own. But the worsening steel industry forces major cutbacks and June is bumped down to an all-male pit. She becomes the brunt of the other workers' hostilities and is forced to fight against them -- and the man she loves -- to save her job.

Standout Aspects

Acting

Lisa Eichhorn's raw, unsentimental performance anchors every frame.

Cinematography

Bleak Minnesota winters as character, not backdrop.

Best for:Solo: Rainy afternoon when you need to feel something quietly devastating.·Streaming: Deep-cut 80s discovery no one in your film club has seen.
Heads up:Violence: Workplace harassment escalates to physical threats and assault.·Triggers: Flashbacks to domestic abuse, depicted without exploitation.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Shot on location during the actual 1981-1983 steel crisis; many extras were laid-off miners. The 'fiction' was their documentary.

Trivia

Lisa Eichhorn turned down studio films to make this. It killed her mainstream career. She called it 'the only choice I don't regret.'
