Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Shot in 1945 Vienna, literally among the rubble — the bombed-out streets you see weren't sets. This was one of the first German-language productions after the fall, made when the country itself felt like a crime scene.
Rabenalt was a controversial figure who continued directing through the Nazi era; this post-war noir can be read as his attempt at moral rehabilitation, with Manders as a stand-in for complicit bourgeoisie who thought they could marry into innocence.
