Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Karloff and Lorre were both escaping typecasting here—Karloff fresh from Universal monsters, Lorre from Warner Bros. crime pics. Columbia tossed them in a blender.
That 'superman' serum plot? Barely veiled WWII anxiety about eugenics and battlefield enhancement, played for giggles because 1942 audiences were exhausted.

Reactions from the web
Mr. Karloff had the most shocking eyes. They could be sweet and innocent one moment then get very scary, almost like he was crazy the next. Such a good actor. His eyes sent chills down my spine when I watched his movies as a kid.
