The Manaki brothers were Ottoman citizens of Aromanian descent, making this one of cinema's earliest examples of minority filmmakers documenting their own region.
The actual film stock survived two world wars, Balkan border redraws, and a fire—only for critics to later debate whether the brothers' 'chronicles' were art or imperial souvenir-collecting.
