This is actually a remake of the 2001 German film 'Das Experiment,' which was itself based on Philip Zimbardo's infamous 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment.
Zimbardo himself criticized the film for sensationalism, which is rich coming from the guy who let his own experiment spiral into psychological torture for six days.
