The real Wasp Network members were arrested in 1998, and five were eventually traded back to Cuba in a 2014 prisoner exchange involving Alan Gross — the film barely mentions this because Assayas wanted the focus on domestic drama, not geopolitical resolution.
Ana de Armas plays Ana Margarita Martinez, who in real life later sued the Cuban government for $27 million and wrote a book — the film's sympathetic portrayal of her was controversial among anti-Castro activists who felt it minimized her trauma.
