Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
This was Chaplin's second film for Essanay Studios, made just weeks after leaving Keystone where he felt rushed and creatively stifled.
The 'drunken tramp' archetype was already tired by 1915, but Chaplin's precise physicality elevated it into art — this film shows him still negotiating between crude knockabout and the poetic sophistication he'd soon perfect.
