Alan Moore hunts rare books through a fever dream of London's literary underbelly.
‘The Cardinal and the Corpse' marks the beginning of Petit’s loose partnership with writer Iain Sinclair. There’s a nod towards narrative here involving a book-search launched by graphic novelist Alan Moore and a dealer (the dapper but barking Driffield), but it’s little more than an excuse to showcase a number of authors and other miscreants.
Direction
Petit and Sinclair's shambling, haunted London psychogeography.
Acting
Alan Moore's magnificent, booming presence in a rare screen role.

Director
Iain Sinclair
Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
This launched Sinclair and Petit's 'London Orbital' era, mapping the M25 as a magical circle of urban blight.
Driffield was a real book dealer; his 'barking' eccentricity was not performance. The film preserves a genuine subculture now largely extinct.
