A camera crew follows Helmut Newton, the fashion and ad photographer whose images of tall, blond, big-breasted women are part of the iconography of twentieth-century erotic fantasy. He's on the go from L.A., to Paris, to Monte-Carlo, to Berlin, where he was a youth until he escaped from the Nazis in 1936. We see him on shoots, interviewing models, and discussing his work.
Cinematography
Newton's own compositions—technically perfect, morally complicated.
Acting
Charlotte Rampling's deadpan shade toward Newton's 'direction.'
Production
Glamorous 80s excess: Monte Carlo, naked models, zero self-awareness.

Director
Adrian Maben
Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Newton's wife June (aka 'Alice Springs') shot the behind-the-scenes photos, creating a meta-commentary on who controls the gaze.
This 1989 doc arrived just before 90s feminist backlash against fashion photography; Newton's unapologetic stance made him a lightning rod.
