Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
1938 Czech cinema often used nested narratives to circumvent censorship; the gossip frame let controversial topics ('illegitimate' pregnancy) be discussed without endorsing them.
Director Hugo Haas fled Czechoslovakia after the Nazi occupation, remade this story in Hollywood as 'The Girl on the Front Page' (1936 was earlier, but his themes persisted).
