Standout Aspects

Score

Haunting strings that make bugs feel Shakespearean.

Writing

Bullying arcs that actually resolve with empathy, not revenge.

Best for:Solo: When you need a good ugly cry alone with snacks.·Family: Brave parents only — have tissues and explanations ready.·Rewatch: Years later when you're ready to feel it all again.
Heads up:Violence: Firefly-on-firefly bullying and predatory insect attacks.·Emotional: Multiple character deaths and ambiguous survival ending.

Cultural

Released during Japan's Heisei recession, the film's storm metaphor resonated with families facing economic displacement. Director Nakada specifically requested fireflies for their cultural association with transient beauty and summer mortality.
