A 10-year-old boy spends a summer in the country with a childless couple and a precocious girl.
Acting
Wood and Birch's chaotic-kid chemistry outshines the adult stars.
Writing
Donoghue's script trusts kids to carry real dramatic weight.
Director
Mary Agnes Donoghue
Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Donoghue wrote this as her directorial debut after penning 'Beaches,' and shot it in rural Ontario standing in for Maine.
This bombed against 'Thelma & Louise' and 'Terminator 2' in summer '91, effectively killing the 'sad adults plus precocious kids' drama until 'About a Boy' resurrected it.

Reactions from the web
Another super under rated movie with many real life moving human moments between Don Johnson, Mellenie Griffith and Elijah Wood as a young child. The chemistry between these three is truly amazingly real, natural and authentically believable! Beautifully done props to all involved in the making of this low key yet heart felt movie. Amazed how natural an actor Elijah Wood was already as a young child actor.

Thora Birch's performance in this film is sadly overlooked. Beautifully done.
