The title refers to Mohun Bagan's founding year (1889), but Dasgupta deliberately chose an obscure club to avoid the baggage of Bengal's most storied football legacy.
Dasgupta shot in actual declining north Calcutta neighborhoods scheduled for demolition; several locations no longer exist. The film preserves what the city couldn't.
