Cut (1999)

visceralexperimentalpsychologically raw

Overview

Thriller

A difficult night out sparks a traumatic memory for a woman whose way out is to ritualistically harm, then fix herself. Intercutting the two states of the protagonist's psyche, rich golden sweeps from the past begin to bleed into the reds and blues of the film's present.

Standout Aspects

Cinematography

Those bleeding gold-to-red transitions are doing SO much emotional labor.

Editing

The intercutting between 'then' and 'now' is disorienting in the best way.

Best for:Solo: Late night, lights off, no interruptions. You need to marinate in this.·Rewatch: Second viewing to catch how the color palette shifts mirror her dissociation.
Heads up:Disturbing: Explicit self-harm depicted as ritualistic, not gratuitous but deeply unsettling.·Triggers: Trauma flashbacks with blurred consent boundaries in the golden-lit scenes.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Sarah Turner shot this on 16mm and chemically processed the film herself to achieve those bleeding color shifts — no digital grading in 1999, baby.

Cultural

Cut arrived during a wave of British avant-garde filmmakers (Turner, Carine Adler, Molly Dineen) using the short form to explore female subjectivity through formal experimentation rather than dialogue.
