This is not to be confused with the 2009 Gerard Butler movie of the same name, which somehow has an even wilder premise. France and Hollywood independently decided 'Gamer' was a perfect title in the 2000s.
Released right as 'The Matrix' obsession peaked, this captures that weird era where filmmakers thought video games were inherently cinematic but had no idea how to show actual gameplay. The 'game' scenes are gloriously abstract.
