Overview

Animation

A young boy who has lived without his father for some time buys the tallest eggplant seedling at the market, hoping to grow it into a plant that will bring them lots of fruit. When the plant eventually grows all the way to the clouds, the boy decides to climb up to see what lies beyond, and has the time of his life with the rain-making oni.

Standout Aspects

Direction

Dezaki's kinetic framing makes 10 minutes feel infinite.

Sound

Sparse audio design lets the visuals scream instead.

Best for:Solo: Late night when your brain needs something inexplicable.·Rewatch: Frame-by-frame to catch Dezaki's visual madness.·Friends: Stoned or sober, someone's jaw will drop.

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Raijin (thunder gods) in folklore are chaotic but rarely malicious—this oni subverts the 'scary storm' trope into something tender.

Insight

Dezaki made this during his experimental period at Madhouse; the eggplant-as-ladder motif reappears in his 1979 'Aim for the Ace!' tennis imagery.
