Ford actually learned to milk cows and drive a carriage for this role. The barn-raising scene used a real Amish community—no actors, just locals who agreed to be filmed doing what they actually do.
The film was originally a much harder thriller titled 'Called Home' until Weir and screenwriters Earl W. Wallace and William Kelley reshaped it around the romance. The ending was rewritten multiple times because test audiences refused to accept Book and Rachel together.
