Director Stefan Ruzowitzky won an Oscar for The Counterfeiters (2007), making this his English-language debut — and possibly why the European sensibility clashes weirdly with the Michigan setting.
The film was shot in actual blizzard conditions, with temperatures hitting -20°F. Olivia Wilde later said she couldn't feel her face for key emotional scenes, which accidentally worked for her character's dissociative state.
