Sueyan graduated with a diploma in Performing Arts, Theatre, in Brisbane in 1984. Her first stage production was Summer Time Blues at the La Boîte Theatre followed by Loves Labour Lost with the Royal Queensland Theatre Company. Her first foray into television was behind the scenes. In 1976 she was a producers Assistant at the ABC on the News and This Day Tonight. In 1979 she got her first on camera role as co-presenter on the children's programme Over Ann's Rainbow and the lifestyle show Your Home.
