Naomi McDuffie was created by Brian Michael Bendis in 2019, making her one of DC's newest characters to get her own show. She was named after real-life comics writer Dwayne McDuffie.
The show's Northwest setting and diverse ensemble were deliberate choices to center Black girl joy in spaces superhero media usually ignores. Its cancellation after one season sparked familiar conversations about which stories networks actually commit to.
