The real Polynesian Panthers existed from 1971-1974, directly inspired by the US Black Panthers but adapting their ten-point program to fight New Zealand's Dawn Raids against Pasifika overstayers.
Director Tom Hern spent years developing this after discovering his own uncle was a Panther; the series deliberately centers Melani's perspective to challenge the testosterone-heavy revolutionary narrative.
