Ophelia visits, upset as usual. He latest boyfriend has left her, as usual, and the family tries to find something she's good at.

Overview

ComedyFamily

A satirical inversion of the ideal of the perfect American nuclear family, they are an eccentric wealthy family who delight in everything grotesque and macabre, and are never really aware that people find them bizarre or frightening. In fact, they themselves are often terrified by "normal" people.

Standout Aspects

Acting

Carolyn Jones and John Astin's chemistry is disgustingly romantic.

Production

That iconic living room—a masterclass in set design economy.

Writing

Wit so dry it could preserve a corpse.

Best for:Solo: Perfect comfort watch when you're feeling deliciously weird.·Family: Introduce kids to dark humor that never punches down.·Background: Lurch's groans make excellent ambient ASMR.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Charles Addams created the characters for New Yorker cartoons in 1938, and none had names until the 1964 TV adaptation forced him to choose. He picked Gomez for the father because it sounded 'Hispanic enough to be exotic.'

Trivia

Ted Cassidy (Lurch) improvised 'You rang?' in his first episode—it became the character's signature. He was also the only cast member tall enough to play Frankenstein's monster in an episode, which he did uncredited.
