Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Charles Addams created the characters for New Yorker cartoons in 1938, and none had names until the 1964 TV adaptation forced him to choose. He picked Gomez for the father because it sounded 'Hispanic enough to be exotic.'
Ted Cassidy (Lurch) improvised 'You rang?' in his first episode—it became the character's signature. He was also the only cast member tall enough to play Frankenstein's monster in an episode, which he did uncredited.
