7de Laan pioneered multilingual South African television, switching between Afrikaans, English, Setswana, and Zulu as naturally as its characters switch drama.
The fictional Hillside is based on Melville, Johannesburg, and many exterior shots were filmed there until the production moved to Auckland Park studios. Some actors stayed for 15+ years.
