Rei Furuya is based on Amuro Tatsuhito, a fictional detective created by Japanese mystery writer Yasuhiko Nishizawa, continuing Detective Conan's tradition of naming characters after mystery authors.
The series functions as palate cleanser AND poison — slice-of-life comfort that constantly reminds you this man's friends are dead or trying to kill him, with Vermouth's appearance in episode 4 explicitly tying back to Bourbon's Bourbon arc trauma.
