Parallel Lives

Apr 1, 1997

Duncan wakes up one morning to discover that he is a wealthy and successful artist, and that it was Samantha - not Sydney - who survived the car crash as a child. Everything is turned upside down and the lives of all the characters are quite different. It all turns out to be VR scenario orchestrated by the very much alive Dr. Bloom to test Duncan's loyalty.

Standout Aspects

Production

VR sequences look like someone spilled Lisa Frank on a Commodore 64.

Acting

Lori Singer sells impossible tech-babble with genuine wounded intensity.

Score

Thundering synth score that demands you watch in neon sunglasses.

Best for:Streaming: Late-night rabbit hole for forgotten 90s sci-fi archaeology.·Solo: Nobody else will understand why you're yelling at Fox executives.·Binge: Thirteen episodes — perfect weekend commitment before it haunts you.
Heads up:Disturbing: Psychological manipulation through forced virtual reality intimacy.·Triggers: Parental death in car accident is central recurring trauma.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Fox aired episodes wildly out of order, destroying narrative continuity and guaranteeing cancellation. The intended viewing order only exists in fan reconstructions online.

Cultural

Anthony Stewart Head joined this immediately before landing Giles on Buffy — his prickly mentor energy here is basically audition tape for the Watcher role.
