Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
McGoohan developed Rafferty himself after years of development hell following The Prisoner's controversial finale. He wanted to prove he could play accessible humanity — CBS disagreed.
This was one of several 'difficult genius doctor' pilots that bombed in 1977; the concept wouldn't succeed until St. Elsewhere and House refined the formula. Rafferty was simply too early.
