Standout Aspects

Acting

Clunes and Jones trading pathetic desperation like Olympic gold.

Production

Gorgeous post-war austerity aesthetic on ITV budget.

Writing

Bittersweet scripts that mock and mourn British decline.

Best for:Streaming: When you want obscure Britcom history nobody's heard of.·Solo: Late-night discovery of forgotten '90s gems.·Rewatch: Catching details you missed in this six-episode wonder.
Heads up:Emotional: Undercurrent of PTSD and men lost to peacetime irrelevance.

Trivia

Les Dawson's final screen role—he died months after filming completed.

Cultural

Created by writers who'd lived through actual demob; the humiliation of auditioning for Auntie Beeb is autobiographical venom.
