The Wild Reed

Mar 24, 1960

When Frankie Aspen's saxophone-playing takes a sudden turn for the worse, Johnny determines to find out what is bothering him.

Overview

DramaMysteryCrime

Jazz pianist Johnny Staccato supplements his meager musician's income by working as a private detective. The background for many of the episodes is his friend "Waldo's" jazz club in New York City's Greenwich Village, featuring performances by the Pete Candoli jazz combo which included Barney Kessel, Shelly Manne, Red Mitchell, Red Norvo and Johnny Williams. The theme was composed by Elmer Bernstein.

Standout Aspects

Acting

Cassavetes broods magnificently; this predates his directing fame.

Score

Elmer Bernstein theme + real jazz legends jamming weekly.

Production

Authentic Village atmosphere—Waldo's club feels lived-in.

Best for:Solo: 2 AM. Rain outside. Pretend you're in 1959 Greenwich Village.·Binge: 27 tight episodes—gone too soon, perfect for a weekend.·Background: The jazz combo is the real star here.
Heads up:Violence: 1959 TV violence: tame by today's standards, but noir-bleak.

Trivia

The Pete Candoli combo featured future Oscar-winner John Williams (credited as 'Johnny') on piano in early episodes.

Cultural

This was ABC's attempt to capitalize on the private-eye craze and jazz hipster culture simultaneously—peak 1959 network desperation.
