Standout Aspects

Practical Effects

Willis O'Brien's Kong still breathes more soul than most CGI titans.

Direction

Cooper and Schoedsack: adventurers filming adventurers, meta before meta.

Score

Max Steiner's thunderous orchestral bombast invented the monster movie sound.

Best for:Solo: Late night with the lights off, phone away, surrender to 1933 magic.·Date Night: She screams, you scream, stop-motion dinosaurs eat everybody.
Heads up:Disturbing: Indigenous islanders depicted through unfortunate 1930s colonial lens — aged badly.·Violence: Giant ape crushing, dinosaur munching, biplane assault — surprisingly brutal for 1933.
