Zygmunt Korczyński wants to make Justyna his mistress. Meanwhile, she falls in love—mutually—with Jan Bohatyrowicz. Her first visit to the Bohatyrowicz settlement becomes a major event: some welcome her warmly, others voice grievances against the manor.
