Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
The show's actual steamboat, the Gordon C. Greene, was a real Mississippi vessel built in 1923. It later became a floating restaurant before burning down in St. Louis in 1970.
Burt Reynolds quit after 20 episodes to star in Gunsmoke, and the show never quite found its footing again—proving even 1959 knew Reynolds was destined for bigger boats.
