Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Eric Chappell created this immediately after 'Rising Damp' ended, essentially swapping Leonard Rossiter's Rigsby for Peter Bowles' Howard—both housing-based class comedies about men who refuse to accept their social standing.
Peter Bowles originally turned down 'The Bounder' to star in 'Only When I Laugh,' but changed his mind when that sitcom's writing declined—making this his definitive '80s rogue performance.
