Szczecin was a German city until 1945; its contested identity mirrors the show's themes of inherited secrets. Polish critics called it the first true 'Polish noir' that didn't imitate Scandinavia.
Creator Xawery Żuławski (son of legendary director Andrzej Żuławski of Possession) originally wrote Zawieja as male; the gender flip fundamentally rewrote how Polish audiences receive 'difficult' women on screen.
